The 2023 Charles Parker Day was a hybrid event - the video is still available and here are some photos

This year’s Charles Parker Day took place on Wednesday 26 April, at the Sir Tom Cowie Lecture Theatre, Sir Tom Cowie Campus
at St Peter's, University of Sunderland, Sunderland, SR6 0DD. The event was streamed on our youtube channel

Kellie While (Chair of AudioUK and Head of 7digital Creative) hosted the day and speakers included:-

  • Alan Hall and Phoebe McIndoe (Falling Tree) talking about their BBC Radio 4 series ‘Light's Out’.

  • Peregrine Andrews (Moving Air) on his series ‘My Dream Dinner Party’ on BBC Radio 4 and his work on the re-creation for BBC Radio 3 of radio’s first feature.

  • Feature presenter/producer and actor Felicity Finch (Ruth Archer) met the two Sunderland people featured in BBC Radio 2’s 21st Century Folk project along with Kellie While who organised the project and one of the songwriters – Sean Cooney from The Young ’Uns.

  • Andrew Cheal, a former sports reporter who was taught by Charles Parker at the Polytechnic of Central London, was in conversation with Charles’ daughter Sara and recent winners of the Charles Parker Prize - Talia Augustidis (2022), Chantal Herbert (2021) and Lewis Harrower (2020).

We also met the nominees for the 2023 Prize before BBC Radio 4 Commissioning Editor, Hugh Levinson announced the five winners whose work will be broadcast during the summer on ‘New Storytellers’.

After a tea/coffee break there was a choice of sessions:-

Students attending were invited to a Masterclass on Sound Design (1600-1700), and other attendees to a breakout event about the influence of Charles’ work and teaching (1600-1700).

There was no charge for the Charles Parker Day, the breakout events, or for watching the event on youtube - we would welcome donations to support the work of the Trust.
